The RRP with Rich Roll
Episode 33: Show Notes.
Today we are back with another story behind the story of a change-maker who is an absolute podcast role model. In this episode we welcome Rich Roll, a champion swimmer turned alcoholic, turned lawyer who ended up having a few run-ins with the law himself.
Rich’s incredible story about hitting rock-bottom and clawing his way back to sobriety is one that has inspired many along the way. After going through the recovery process, Rich began putting the pieces of his life back together only to realize that he was out of shape and burning the candle at both ends — essentially hitting rock-bottom physically.
So, in his 40’s, Rich dusted off his training trucks and started swimming again, switched to a plant-based diet, and used this combination to gain back his health. This led him down a path towards doing ultra-endurance races and being in the best shape of his life!
Rich then when ton to write about how he overcame all of these rock-bottom moments in his #1 bestselling book, Finding Ultra, which led to the launch of his wildly popular and inspirational Rich Roll podcast. During our conversation with Rich, we are going to explore how he went from being a bestselling author to starting his super successful podcast, which was not as linear of a process as you might think.
Rich discovered that even with a bestselling book under his belt, the speaking gigs and other paid opportunities that you’d expect with all that success simply were not happening! This resulted in Rich hitting rock-bottom again, financially, which got so bad that his house was in foreclosure, his cars were repossessed, and the city even repossessed his garbage cans.
It was at that time that Rich stepped out and launched his podcast in his friend’s barn, while flat broke, but still full of hope and inspiration. So whether you are thinking about getting sober, quitting your day job, starting a plant-based diet, writing a book, or even getting into the best shape of your life, don’t miss out on this episode!

“Our strengths are often also our weaknesses, so it can be problematic if it’s not kept in check.” — @richroll [0:14:11]
“That kind of push it, push it, push it and never allow yourself to rest is a habit and a disposition of mine that’s also taken me to some not-so-great places.” — @richroll [0:18:04]
“I could’ve gone and been a bigger fish in a smaller pond, but that would’ve robbed me of discovering what would happen if I was a small fish in a very big pond. I wanted to see what I was capable of and that seemed to be the best place to explore that.” — @richroll [0:20:32]
“Sobriety is very messy and non-linear. But ultimately, I did have that day that I woke up and just was like, ‘I can’t do this anymore’.” — @richroll [0:33:18]
“What struck me about Ultraman and why I was so attracted to it, I think, is that it looked like a spiritual odyssey to me. It wasn’t really a race. The way it was described by the race director was, ‘Yeah, it’s a race and people win and all of that, but this is about getting 35 athletes, hand chosen from around the world, and their crews and taking them on this journey around this island so that, at the conclusion of which, every single person involved with it is transformed.’” — @richroll [0:51:11]
“For a lot of years after Finding Ultra came out, we had a really hard financial time trying to figure out how to put food on the table and pay the bills. It was incredibly difficult.” — @richroll [0:53:53]
“The success of Finding Ultra, I think, is in large part due to the fact that I was willing to be vulnerable in sharing my story and that’s what people connected with.” — @richroll [0:59:09]
“A good podcast host is truly interested in the person that they’re talking to. They’re present for that experience.” — @richroll [1:02:09]
“I live out of balance on the day-to-day and perhaps on the week-to-week. But telescoping up, my life is in balance in the macro.” — @richroll [1:09:40]
“There’s a satisfaction with producing something that is entirely the result of your own efforts that creates a connection to the material.” — @richroll[1:12:07]
